What Happens at a BNI Meeting, Minute by Minute
If you have never been to a BNI meeting, the idea of a structured, early-morning business meeting every single week might sound like a lot. Once you see how it runs, it makes sense. The agenda is built so that every minute moves referrals forward, and it starts and ends on time so everyone can get on with their day.
Here is a walk-through of a typical BNI meeting. Exact timing varies a little from week to week, but the flow is very consistent.
Before 7:00 AM: open networking
Members and visitors start arriving early. Coffee gets poured, breakfast gets ordered and conversations start.
This is some of the most valuable time of the week. It is when members:
- Catch up with the people they have been passing referrals to
- Set up one-to-one meetings
- Say hello to visitors and introduce them around
Visitor tip: Arrive early. The visitor hosts will greet you, help you find a seat and introduce you to members whose businesses connect with yours.
7:00 AM: the meeting opens
The president calls the meeting to order, welcomes everyone and gives a quick overview of what the morning will look like. Then the structured part begins.
The first few minutes: an education moment
Most BNI meetings include a short education segment. It is usually just a few minutes, and it covers one practical idea about networking or the BNI system: how to give a better referral, how to run a one-to-one, how to make your weekly ask more specific. Small lessons, repeated every week, make a big difference over time.
Weekly presentations
This is the heart of the meeting. Each member stands up and gives a short presentation about their business. The good ones are not sales pitches. They are clear asks:
- Who is the ideal customer this week?
- What situation should the room listen for?
- How should a referral reach them?
When you hear a whole room of these back to back, you start to see how many conversations in your own week could turn into a referral for someone in the room.
Visitor introductions
Visitors get a moment to stand up and introduce themselves: your name, your business and what kind of customer you are looking for. Keep it short and friendly. Nobody expects a polished speech.
The featured presentation
Each week, one or two members get extra time for a longer featured presentation. This is where the room really learns about a business: what they do, what makes them different, what a great referral looks like and what kind of conversation leads to one.
Featured presentations are one of the best parts of the meeting for visitors, because you get a real look at how members teach each other to refer them.
Referrals and thank-yous
Members pass referrals to each other during this part of the meeting, and they report back on business that came from referrals they received. Members also share testimonials about other members they have worked with.
This is the part where Givers Gain® becomes something you can see. People are not just talking about helping each other. They are doing it, every week, in front of the room.
Announcements and wrap-up
The meeting closes with any chapter announcements, a reminder about upcoming visitor days or events, and a thank-you to visitors for coming.
After the meeting
Plenty of people stay a few minutes afterward. Visitors often ask questions about membership and whether their category is open. Members finalize one-to-ones and follow up on referrals that were just passed.
Why the structure matters
It can look formal from the outside, but the structure is what makes BNI work:
- It is predictable. You know exactly what you will get for your time.
- It is fair. Every member gets a voice every week.
- It builds habits. Weekly repetition teaches everyone how to refer each other.
A holiday weekend note
With the Fourth of July landing this weekend, a lot of people are traveling or taking a well-earned break from the heat. When you are back in your routine, consider making a Thursday morning part of it.
Want to see it for yourself? BNI A1 Networkers meets every Thursday at 7:00 AM at Brothers Family Restaurant in Peoria. Plan your visit.
