Mentoring New Members: How the First 90 Days Set the Tone

Joining a BNI chapter is exciting. A new member walks in with a fresh seat, a room full of potential referral partners and plenty of enthusiasm. But there is also a lot to learn. How do you give a good weekly presentation? Who should you meet first? How do referrals actually get passed?

The first 90 days often decide whether a new member thrives or struggles. That is why mentoring matters so much.

Why the early months matter

Habits form quickly. A new member who learns to give a clear weekly ask, schedule regular one-to-ones and follow up on referrals early on usually keeps those habits for the long run. A new member who feels lost may start to wonder whether it is worth showing up.

Good mentoring helps new members:

  • Understand how the meeting and referral system work
  • Get to know the people in the room faster
  • Avoid common early mistakes
  • Start giving referrals, not just waiting to receive them

What a mentor actually does

A mentor is an experienced member who checks in regularly with a new member during their first few months. It is not complicated. Most of it comes down to answering questions and offering encouragement.

A good mentor will:

  • Explain the meeting. What each part of the agenda is for and how to prepare.
  • Help with the weekly presentation. Give honest feedback on making it clearer and more specific.
  • Make introductions. Point the new member toward people whose customers overlap with theirs.
  • Talk through one-to-ones. Share what to ask and how to follow up.
  • Be available. Sometimes the most helpful thing is just being someone the new member can text with a quick question.

A simple 90-day roadmap

Every new member is different, but this rough plan works for many people.

Days 1 to 30: Learn the room

  • Attend every meeting and arrive early
  • Learn names and what each member does
  • Schedule one-to-ones with members who share a customer base
  • Practice the weekly introduction and ask for feedback

Days 31 to 60: Start giving

  • Listen closely to each member's weekly ask
  • Look for people in your own network who might need those services
  • Pass your first referrals, even small ones
  • Keep scheduling one-to-ones

Days 61 to 90: Build momentum

  • Sharpen your weekly ask based on what you have learned
  • Invite a visitor who could benefit from the chapter
  • Follow up on every referral you received and report results
  • Prepare for your first featured presentation, if it comes up

Common mistakes to avoid

Mentors can help new members steer clear of a few common pitfalls:

  • Expecting instant results. Referral relationships take time to build.
  • Talking more than listening. The best new members learn about others first.
  • Skipping one-to-ones. The weekly meeting is only part of the picture.
  • Keeping the ask too broad. Vague asks lead to vague results.
  • Waiting to give. Givers Gain® works best when you start giving early.

Being a good mentee

Mentoring works both ways. New members get the most out of it when they:

  • Ask questions, even ones that feel basic
  • Show up consistently
  • Try the advice and report back on how it went
  • Stay open to honest feedback

Why mentoring benefits the whole chapter

When new members get off to a strong start, the entire chapter benefits. They pass more referrals, bring in more visitors and become more engaged over time. Many members who were well mentored go on to mentor others, which keeps that culture of support going.

At BNI A1 Networkers, helping new members succeed is part of how we work. Fall is a great time to join a chapter, too. With the summer heat behind us and the busy end of the year ahead, it is a good season to build momentum.
