What a Referral Partner Needs From You to Send Business With Confidence
Most of your referral partners genuinely want to help you. They like you, they believe in your work and they would be happy to send business your way. So why do some relationships produce steady referrals while others never seem to get going?
Often, it comes down to whether your partner has what they need to refer you with confidence. Every referral carries a little risk for the person making it. When you remove that risk and make the process easy, referrals follow more naturally.
Here is what your referral partners need from you.
A clear picture of your ideal customer
Your partners cannot send you the right people if they do not know who the right people are. Be as specific as you can:
- What type of customer do you serve best?
- What situation are they usually in when they need you?
- Where are they located?
- Who is not a good fit?
That last question is easy to overlook. Telling partners who you do not serve saves everyone time and keeps them from sending referrals that go nowhere.
Words they can actually use
Your partners are not experts in your business, and they should not have to be. Give them a simple sentence or two they can say when the moment comes. For example:
- "You should talk to my friend who does this. She is great with first-time buyers."
- "I know someone who handles exactly that. Can I have him give you a call?"
The easier it is to bring you up, the more often it will happen.
Confidence in your work
Before someone recommends you, they want to know you will make them look good. Help them feel sure of that:
- Let them experience your work if it makes sense for your business.
- Share stories and results from real customers, with permission.
- Point them to your reviews and any licenses, credentials or certifications.
- Explain your process so they know what the customer can expect.
The more they understand about how you work, the more confidently they can describe it.
A fast, professional response
This one is entirely in your control, and it may matter most. When a partner sends you a referral:
- Respond quickly, ideally the same day.
- Be courteous and professional in every interaction, even if the job turns out to be small or not a fit.
- Follow through on what you promise.
If a referral has a bad experience, your partner will hesitate before sending the next one. If it goes well, they will be eager to do it again.
Updates on how it went
Close the loop. Let your partner know when you have reached out, and again when the referral turns into business (or does not). A quick text or a thank-you at the next meeting is enough.
Updates help in two ways. They show your partner that you take their referrals seriously, and they help both of you learn what kinds of referrals work best.
Easy ways to connect people
Make the handoff simple. Your partner should always have:
- Your phone number and the best way to reach you
- A few business cards to hand out
- A link to your website or booking page
- Permission to share your contact information
Some people prefer to give a phone number; others prefer to make a three-way introduction by text or email. Tell your partners which you like best.
Gratitude
Never underestimate the power of a thank-you. Recognize your partners when they help you, publicly when it makes sense and privately always. A handwritten note, a shout-out at a meeting or a review of their business all go a long way.
And of course, look for ways to return the favor. The strongest referral relationships run in both directions. That is what Givers Gain® is all about.
A quick checklist
Before your next one-to-one, ask yourself whether your partner knows:
- Who your ideal customer is
- What to say to bring you up
- Why they can trust you with their contacts
- How to reach you quickly
- That you will keep them updated and say thank you
If any of those are missing, that is your agenda for the conversation. With the busy end-of-year season arriving across the West Valley, there is no better time to have it.
